Cheers and Jeers I watched the pairs skate the other night, and saw the gutsiest thing I think I've ever seen. Attempting the first throw-quad in history, Dan Zhang fell, giving her knee such a nasty twist it didn't look like she'd be able to leave the ice under her own power, let alone finish the routine. ![]() ![]() But she did finish, and the pair took the silver medal. ![]() Whether they had taken a medal or not, they showed what champions are made of by finishing their routine after a crushing fall that might have finished skaters with less heart. ![]() Later, I saw an interview with the Russian pairs team after winning the gold medal at the Olympics. The interviewer asked the Russians what they thought of the Chinese team continuing after that horrible fall, and the first thing the Russian chick said was tat it was "Nothing special." She was mad because she thought the Chinese pair had hogged the ice during the warmup period, so they deserved what they got. The Russian guy said "That's what they get for trying such a difficult move." BOO! That Russian pair holds the record for the worst wipeout in skating history. He dropped her on her head and she was unconscious sprawled on the ice with a serious concussion just a couple years ago. Having had a serious accident themselves, you'd think they could be a bit more gracious. Especially considering they had gold medals hanging around their necks at the time. The competition was over. A true champion knows how to be graceful in victory, as well as defeat. It's obvious that, while the Russians know how to skate, they don't know the first thing about being sportsmen. I'm a fan of skating, but those two have forever lost my respect. | |
